A random invitation to try Lagree Fitness in West LA revealed several pleasant discoveries: There’s free parking on La Cienega (one of the busiest streets in the city), fitness on the West side doesn’t have to be expensive or exclusive, and 25 minutes is more than enough time to work your body from head to toe.
I made the last discovery after already booking two classes back to back. I consider myself a bit of a powerhouse, thanks to years of Yoga, Pilates and Habibi Body so I thought I’d be fine. I was wrong. Under the watchful eye of my instructor, I questioned all of my life and food choices for the past 24 hours as I squatted, lunged, rowed, and split my way through a workout on the most insane reformer I’ve ever seen in my life.
The Supraformer may look like a trendy take on the classic reformer, but it’s really a torture device designed to force you to use your powerhouse, whether you want to or not. The Supra is molded and riddled with strange markings and numbers, which the instructor uses to tell you where to put your parts. It leaves little to no room for error or potential injury, because that’s the only way you’ll survive the most amazing feature: IT’S BALANCED ON A HYDRAULIC BASE. Yes, that’s right. The entire reformer is balanced on a base that moves up and down and side to side. So even if you’re pretty adept at Russian Splits, I’m willing to bet you’ve never done them on an incline or leaning to the left… no matter how many springs you’ve worked up to.
25 minutes on the Supraformer was more than enough to help me feel the burn. I left feeling energized an extended, without the normal ache or compression associated with trying new strenuous workouts. The next day I felt a welcome tinge in my quadriceps to remind me that I did something new… and it was good.
Lagree Fitness is located in West Los Angeles and Westwood. There are plans to open an additional location in Santa Monica.
