The Spring-Summer 2013 collection from New York-based designer had a decidedly punk gothic vibe, and seemed to favor corset looks, leather, silk, and a LOT of lace.

The pleated shell structures at the Zaha Hadid installation at Sci Arc seemed like something straight out of one of Masamune Shirow’s anime visions of utopian cities: organic, futuristic shapes, half-plant, half-egg-shaped, that seem to have sprouted up from the ground. This prototype explores the creation of new physical shapes and draping of materials (i.e. cloth, chains, and fiberglass) over mathematically-generated structural wood skeletons.

Evander Holyfield, one of the last heavyweight boxing legends, recently celebrated his 50th anniversary and announced his retirement. Looking at his collection of boxing memorabilia on display at Julien’s in Beverly Hills felt like being hit with three decades of boxing history all at once—exciting, yet slightly overwhelming, and a slight tinge of wistfulness.

San Francisco designer Sarah Ahn showed Spring/Summer 2013, at Concept Studios. Structured jackets and tops with very strong lines contrasted with light, flowing long dresses. Fabric bands providing structure to garments were a common thread throughout.

Our inspiration comes from a fascination with armored costumes, and desire to always create clothes that represent a strong and unique woman. Also, the infinity of influences nurturing our creative process gave rise to a look that recalls to us a retro sci-fi film from the 1960s. Silhouette inspirations from the 1950s pin-up era and a few freer and more airy A-shape cuts from the 1960s were also part of our inspiration for this season’s silhouettes.

Rickey Castleberry’s and Andrew Davis’s resumes are impressive for any age, particularly a 20-year-old. Currently working on a new mystery drama TV series entitled “Life as We Know It,” not just as actors, but as writers and producers, they just got back from New York, where they attended red-carpet fashion events and are signing with one of the top production companies for their upcoming TV series.

Kamasi Washington was born in Los Angeles at the start of the 80s into a family where music was akin to breathing. His mother, an accomplished flutist, taught chemistry in high school, and his father, who plays with him in some concerts, was a professional saxophonist by night and high school music teacher by day. By two years old, Kamasi had already started playing the drums and the piano, and by seven he started playing the clarinet.

Everyone who’s been in touch with mass culture during the 80s and 90s has undoubtedly seen a Herb Ritts photograph. Between the hundreds of magazine covers, music videos, TV commercials, fashion photographs, and celebrity portraits, his ubiquitous iconic images and commercials have been interwoven into our culture.

When you think of fashion, you think of Dior, Gucci, DKNY. You think of brands; you think of lights flashing . . . camera, action . . . What’s interesting to note, however, is that many of the people contributing the most to what you see out there on red carpets and runways are working behind the scenes and rarely seen or heard.
