Distribution shouldn’t be hard, but it is a confusing process for most independent filmmakers. For the part 1 of our distribution series, I interviewed Jerome Coushon creator of THE SECRETS TO DISTRIBUTION. This interview focuses on distributing your independent film via DVD sales and rentals and Netflix. Watch the interview.

It’s one thing when someone else books for you, but since I am an artist and I have a business edge, I want to make sure that everything is taken care of. And maybe I should let somebody else do that, but there have been times when someone else has done it for me and I walked in, and things weren’t as comfortable as I would have wanted them to be. So now I just take that little extra time I have and I make sure that everything is in order from A-Z.

As an artist your image is everything. Photographers, stylists, and the makeup artists are a big part of that. When people see your image they can better relate to your sound. If you can visualize the look you’re after, then it’s all a matter of getting that on to print.

Theatrical distribution is the hardest kind of distribution to obtain from a distributor. So the dirty little secret is if you’re not in one of those top three, you can probably forget about it. However, most people don’t realize that there are a number of films picked up not at those festivals, and usually after they’ve built some kind of pedigree.
