At Pier 57 on February 8, 2013, in New York City, Sally LaPointe showcased her Fall 2013 collection. The diversity of the pieces were amazing. This dark, goth-inspired collection had a bit of an 80s feel to it. However, the references to other influences are endless: Matrix, futuristic styles, flared-hemmed tops, bare-backed silhouettes, and even startling feminine pieces. With a special appearance by Aviva Drescher of Real Housewives of New York, designer Malan Breton’s show was one of the most tweeted during Fashion Week in New York; he really outdid himself with his latest collection. The line was dedicated to Marilyn Monroe, and while watching it, I really felt like I was witnessing an “old Hollywood” made-new tribute. The dresses were demure and sultry, just the way Marilyn Monroe wore them whenever she made a “dressy” formal appearance, or appeared on the red carpet.

Rolando Santana’s latest collection was inspired by the three-dimensional abstract creations of John Chamberlain. Known for his feminine dresses with uncomplicated silhouettes, designer Rolando Santana keeps up that standard and delights us with flirty accents. His textiles are enhanced by rare color details.

My past training and education affects who I am today, and I express who I am today through my design choices and fashion creations. Over the last two years, we have witnessed what amounts to an explosion of African fashion around the globe: Ghana Fashion Week, Mercedes Benz Africa Fashion in South Africa, and Lagos Fashion Week in Nigeria, all in October. Across the ocean in New York, we had Adiree Fashion Week in July, Arise Fashion Week during September New York Fashion Week, and Africa Fashion Week LA in October.

If any fashion sector has managed to stay in the news over 2012, it has definitely been the Plus Size industry. Every month seemed to bring about a new brand’s Plus Size collection and a new repetition of the “market facts & figures,” including the piece de resistance fact that 60% of the American women are overweight and are an average of size 14.

Manilla designer Joel Escober uses textiles ranging from delicate chiffon to the exotic fabric of the piña, a fabric made in the Philippines from the fibers of the pineapple plant. Escober uses the architecture of designs, while still embracing the delicate silhouette of the female form.

On October 11, 2012 for the start of LA Fashion Week, Project Ethos moved their show to downtown this season. Held at The historic Exchange LA and LA Art Walk, Project Ethos featured fashion shows, DJs, and an Icelandic pop group called The Charlies.
