Unless you read his line sheet, Zang Toi’s Spring 2011 Collection was somewhat perplexing. It was his tribute to the 1956 Oscar-winning film, Giant. A parade of pale pinks, blues, and printed frocks were a throwback from the late 50s celebrating Zang Toi’s peculiar fantasy with cowboys and heiresses. As the first cowboy wearing male model appeared shirtless, I was certainly scratching my head trying to understand when Zang Toi’s theme would become clear.

Rebecca Moses presented a stunning visual fashion presentation at Lincoln Center for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week New York Spring 2011. Arun Nevader captures the backstage and highlights from that presentation at Lincoln Center.

The advice I would give to a fashion designer is simply “NEVER GIVE UP.” The journey can be difficult and things may not go as planned; however, when you stay persistent, you will always find a way. Believe in yourself because if you don’t, no one else will.

Now, it’s interesting to understand how VS has evolved over the years from its humble beginnings to where it is today—untouchable goddess-like amazons in frilly underthings. Spotlights, Platinum selling recording artists, the world’s best stylists and runway show producers, and some of the best live event photographers crammed on the riser with their keys to the city. Aren’t they the lucky ones! They get to shoot those winged angels exclusively on the runway.

Beautifully crafted swimsuits describes the Gottex Spring 2011 collection. With clear sporty visors (some draped with matching scarves), the models looked oh so fresh. The swimsuits were well-constructed in colors of pure white, vibrant tie-dyed indigo, blue, and mauve . . . reminiscent of corals in Fiji. Betsey Johnson presented her collection this season in a wild and crazy fashion. On the runway the colorful garments screamed circus meets navy with cheerleader fashion and vivid palettes.

Directives West previewed trends for spring 2011; and after having just returned from the runways in New York, I’d venture to say they really got it right with a Southern California twist. Previewed on the runway that rainy morning of October 4, 2010, was a variety of looks that were predicted to be popular next season, with over 170 looks, ranging from simplistic to comfortable to fun for contemporary, juniors, and girls.
