Hair Rules: Beauty & the Brush
By Shahada Karim | October 7th, 2013 | Category: Beauty, Haircare | Comments Off on Hair Rules: Beauty & the BrushRemember the old rule about brushing your hair 100 strokes before bed to promote healthy, shiny hair? Despite the fact that such a thing has been disproven over the years, some people continue to reach for the brush as the solution. But according to the American Academy of Dermatology, brushing may be part of the problem.
“Hair myths, such as brushing your hair one hundred strokes each day, can cause split ends,” says board-certified dermatologist Paradi Mirmirani, MD, FAAD. Having healthy hair is possible if you know how to care for your hair before and after styling.”
Most wet hair should be handled with care . . . and as little as possible. “Wet hair breaks more easily when combed or brushed.” Dr. Mirmirani says the only exception is textured hair. “It (textured hair) should be brushed when wet, to decrease chances of hair breakage.”
In addition to the brush, Dr. Mirmirani says we should also put down the blow dryer. “Dry your hair by wrapping it in a towel after a shower or a bath. Or simply let the hair air dry.”
