Beauty on the Edge: Trending the Pretty Punk

Punk Princess LookBeauty ImageThe autumn/winter runway featured more than a few looks that pay homage to the quintessential “punk” princess: heavy liner and clear-glossed or nude lips, or dark lip colors against an otherwise bare face.

Lanvin went with the former, featuring models with inky eyes and lips with little more than a sheen of Vaseline on the lips.

Derek Lam switched sides and shifted focus to the brows against clean, matte skin. The rest of the makeup nearly appeared to be an afterthought, adding little more than a carelessly placed stain on an unlined mouth.

It’s a trend that many retailers are hoping to cash in on as we settle into the cooler and often more fashionable autumn/winter season.

Beauty retail giant Sephora got in front of the trend with the release of a massive collection appropriately titled “Pretty in Punk.” The collection takes everything we think we know about “punk” and “rock chic” and adds a decidedly feminine twist to an otherwise edgy makeup philosophy. From multicolored brush sets to a surprisingly potent selection of eyeshadow palettes, the collection has everything a girl (or guy) needs to take a look from docile to daring.

Some of our favorites include the Drop Dead Brush set, which comes in a studded case (with a most awesome skull clasp) that doubles as a purse. The 12-pan IT Palette contains the primary colors and formulations to create a number of eye looks, and the jewel-toned brush sets (there are 5 different colors) pack nicely into a little metal tube that’ll fit nicely into any standard clutch for quick touch-ups.
