Vintage Glo – One-of-a-Kind Jewelry from Treasures Around the World My best friend lived in a 3000 square foot Victorian House with a wraparound porch and fine antique furnishings inside. I loved that house as a child and cherished the memory. From then on, I have carried the love for old, worn, and unique things, anywhere from furnishings to trinkets. —Gloria Bass— Gloria Bass is the wife of a fireman and a stay-at-home mom who home schools her teenage daughter. She has a hefty schedule volunteering in her community and designs beautiful vintage jewelry in her spare time. She has only been designing and selling her jewelry a short while and has already sold quite a few pieces in select boutiques. She has been featured in Ocean Magazine and Riviera Magazine. Celebrities Gloria Loring, Anastasia Brown, Leeza Gibbons, and Cathy Rigby also own pieces from the Vintage Glo collection. Bass combs antique swap meets, boutiques, estate sales, and warehouses; and each hand-selected antique is given new life as Gloria works her magic to design her one-of-a-kind jewelry from her ‘found’ treasures spanning the globe. She’s even been known to purchase an entire chandelier in search of that one perfect piece. You will find anything from key chains and antique ornaments to typewriter keys as main components to her vintage-inspired wearable art. In a recent interview with the creator of Vintage Glo, I asked Gloria to shed some light on her designs and how she got started. Hi Gloria, I’d love to hear a little about you and how you started Vintage Glo. I am married to a fireman for 18 years and [I have] a fifteen-year-old daughter. I have been a stay-at-home mom the whole time, dabbling in different crafts and never dreamed I would be messing with jewelry. I volunteer in the community and home school my daughter.
How did you get started doing jewelry? I started making prayer books, like scrap books, and I embellished them with jewelry—old buttons, old clip on earrings. I got away from that. I knew I had to do something with the old because my house is filled with antiques. It looks like a museum. I started looking for jewelry and started making it. I started making bracelets. My sister was living with me at the time, and she is a web designer. And as I started making this jewelry, I was producing all these pieces and gave them to her. My sister insisted that we create a website and sell it. She came up with the name Vintage Glo. My nickname was Glo in high school. After the website was done, she gave me all the pieces back and said, “Go sell them.” I went out to Irvine Swap Meet and laid my jewelry out and that’s where I got my first offer to be in a store in Costa Mesa. I approached more boutiques in the area. So it’s been pretty easy for you, then? It’s been really easy. In more detail, tell me about your jewelry and what’s involved in the construction. I have made some pretty bizarre stuff, but people love it because it’s out of the box. I made a bracelet out of a door hinge. . .painted, rusted door hinge. And in the holes of that door hinge I had set some old loose rhinestones in the holes. As far as chandelier pieces, I used that to embellish as well. Typewriter keys. . .I typed someone’s name with it. I even used a chain from a plant hanger. Were there any obstacles you encountered when starting your business? I think basically getting the confidence from being out of the box so much. People are so used to the norm. Going out of the norm was pretty scary because I didn’t know if people were as strange (or out of the box) as I was. I love to be different. That’s why my house is full of one-of-a-kind knickknacks. . .furniture. . .I wasn’t sure how people would respond to that. When did you actually start selling?
May 2005 Would you say most of your success is through word-of-mouth and your website? Yes, mostly through word-of-mouth and seeing it on other people. What are your price points? They range for the necklaces from $60-$120 retail. Highest High When I spoke to Anastasia, Gloria Loring, and Leeza Gibbons, and they loved the pieces. Lowest Low Sometimes when I am out there and I see people trying to create what I have already created, it bums me out. But I realize that we have our own spin and nobody can get into my head and do what I do. And that’s been discouraging at some point. [My lowest low] is when I see people trying to copy. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? I can’t imagine not creating my jewelry. I hope that I am more successful and more well-known than I am now. But I am proud of what I’m doing. Any advice you’d like to give to someone trying to start their own jewelryline? Stick with what you love. People are always going to try to get you to [do what they think is cool]. Do what is in your creative heart. Are you interested in mass producing? I’ve been in eight boutiques. I just decided to pull out of them. It wasn’t productive. And I had to reproduce things. . .collecting checks. . .etc. So, no. I only kept one boutique, “Pink Laundry.” I don’t look at magazines because I don’t want to get off focus of what’s in my own creativity. Yet at the boutiques, they see my jewlery and comment on how my designs are what’s totally in right now. I will get up at 1:00 a.m. and I will run down to my studio if I have something in my head. “WATCH” WHAT HAPPENED…AT THE MILUS EVENT
“WATCH” WHAT HAPPENED…AT THE MILUS EVENT
By Marilyn Anderson
There’s no woman or man who wouldn’t love Santa to shimmy down the chimney with a MILUS watch! And it will be easy this year with the new MILUS showroom boutique on Rodeo Drive.
On Sunday, October 21, the luxury Swiss watch brand celebrated their USA opening with a two-part launch event in Beverly Hills. Three hundred guests attended the fabulous evening, including some of Hollywood’s brightest stars from television and film, such asDianne Farr from Numbers and Rescue Me, and Lindsay MacFarland and Elle Travis from First Watch, Broken, and Men Don’t Lie.
The evening began with a VIP reception at the MILUS boutique and then moved to Beverly Hills’ AQUA Lounge, where guests were treated to drinks and appetizers, along with a marvelous live performance by jazz singer and MILUS brand ambassador Jane Monheit.
The exquisite MILUS watch and jewelry collections were on view at both the entertainment venue and the showroom. President and CEO of MILUS USA, Doron Basha, said that their new space is intended to encapsulate their “Highly Personal” brand philosophy by educating key consumers and retail dealers about the brand in an intimate, personal setting.
The new MILUS boutique is located in the heart of the Beverly Hills luxury district and is the company’s first joint corporate and private retail space in the United States. It will serve as a convenient one-stop-shop destination for media, buyers, corporate initiatives, events, and private sales, all by invitation or appointment only.
The grand opening was a phenomenal evening, capped off with oh-so-grand goodie bags, containing a Jane Monheit CD, MILUS cufflinks for men, and MILUS pendants for women.
Hmmmm…when I sit on Santa’s lap this year, I think I’ll ask him for that gorgeous Apiana 18K Red Gold watch with 98 diamonds. Why not? After all, I’ve been both naughty and nice!

Floresheim by Duckie Brown
The New York based design duo teamed up with Floresheim shoes to create a fashionable, more vibrantly colorful shoe that has always been a symbol of classic Americana in men’s footwear. The shoe that “my father” would wear has had a subtle rebirth and now appeals to a much wider demographic of wearers. The shoes come in a variety of colors but is constructed the same. A very sturdy and now more trendier shoe. Okay, this one I don’t own, but if I were a guy, I would! Visit any Floresheim retailer. Victoria’s Secret Miraculous Plunge Pushup Bra
There are bras and there are BRAs! I can speak from experience that I have never owned a pushup bra as effective as the Victoria’s Secret Miraculous Plunge Pushup Bra. They claim that their bra will give you an additional two cups in size. Well, folks, they’re right. You will go from a C-cup to a DD when you put on this bra. It looks as though you had enhancement cosmetically. The good thing about this bra . . . no surgical scars! Purchase the Victoria’s Secret Miraculous Plunge Pushup Bra at any Victoria’s Secret store, or order it online at www.victoriassecret.com.
Loreal Extra-Volume Collagen Hydra Collagen Volumizing Mascara
This little black tube carries a lot of power. After trying eyelash extensions, applying false eyelashes, trying out a variety of lengthening mascaras, I found that Loreal’s Extra-Volume Collagen Volumizing Mascara solved all my eyelash woes. No more clumping, hard-to-remove mascaras. No more costly visits to the salon. This mascara gives the appearance of professionally applied eyelashes. The collagen plumps (and protects) your lashes, too. So as you wear it, your lashes grow stronger, thicker, and longer than if you wore regular mascara. If you are eyelash challenged, then I recommend picking up the “Extreme Volume” version. This product can be found at most drugstores, including Rite Aid, CVS, and Wallgreens.
Give Her a Gift Certificate to Gilly Hicks
For those who know me, it’s no surprise that my favorite store is Gilly Hicks. This is technically a lingerie store, but it also stocks bras, cute tank tops, sleepwear, sweats, robes, hoodies, perfumes, oils, and makeup. The atmosphere of Gilly Hicks was designed to titillate every one of your senses. It’s a visually gorgeous and warm environment, with a great sound system . . . and the smells . . . oh me oh my! Once you enter, it’s very difficult to leave empty-handed. Everything is reasonably priced and packaged in a very special way. Visit www.gillyhicks.com for more information, prices, and locations.
Audio Books
When you have a busy schedule and can’t find the time to enjoy a good book, look into audio books. As a busy editor/entertainer, I rarely have time to read, unless they’re technical books. But to be able to enjoy a juicy romance novel, or delve into the depths of The Secret, or even brush up on my French, I found total enjoyment with the audio book. I used to fall asleep trying to read; but now I can close my eyes, turn the lights off, relax and enjoy someone else reading to me. Best of all, you can pop the CD in your car or put mp3s in your i-POD and drive to work while enjoying great literature. Audio books are sold in most brick and mortar book stores, and just about anywhere online. Amazon.com and barnesandnobles.com both have an enormous selection to choose from, and they’ll even gift wrap the audio books for you. There are also gadgets you can purchase for just that purpose, like the bukki audio book, or Barnes and Noble’s nook.

Vilaiwan Fine Jewelry – Semi-Precious Wearable Art That Complements a Woman’s Charisma!
When I put the right pieces on the right client and I know that is her piece, I get goose bumps because it will complement her face, neckline, complexion . . . it will frame her face and hair. When I put the right piece on, we both feel it and know it. It’s as if that piece was created just for her. That’s the highest point for me because I feel like I completed my job as a designer. It confirms for me that’s why I’m doing this! -Jo-Jo, Vilaiwan Jewelry Designer
Polthakorn Viboonviriyawong, aka Jo-Jo, was born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand. He watched his mother start and build a successful diamond business. His earliest creative memories are of his mother (Vilaiwan) asking him to use his own designskills to help design new settings for her jewelry. As a result of this new-found passion, his mother sent Jo-Jo to the United States to turn that passion into a career. In honor of her support, Vilaiwan Fine Jewelry was born.
Jo-Jo received his Master’s from FIDM and graduated number one in his class. While there, jewelry became his passion. His vision is that jewelry is not just an accessory, but it is art that makes a statement of personality and energy. His designs are inspired by vintage styles. Vilaiwan designs have made the flower the centerpiece of its design and its signature. Jo-Jo hand-makes each piece and uses his relationships in the jewelry business abroad to secure the best materials. You will not find pieces like his anywhere else in the world. This also means that most of the Vilaiwan collection cannot be mass-produced.
Tell me about your background
I got my Master’s Degree in Interior Design. After that, I wanted to have something of my own before I was 30. I started to make jewelry. I gave a piece to one of my friends and she wore it to an art exhibition. Long story short, we made a connection, and we were able to put some of my jewelry in the museum store. Everything started from there. From the first to the third collection, I saw the opportunity. I created a website. We immediately got published in Dailycandy.com. Everythingblew up after that. We got 20,000 hits in two weeks. I was able to sell my first production in ten days. From there I started to learn about the business, like how do you connect to stylists, stores, you have to have a rep to deal with buyers, and people contact you from everywhere in the world.
So you had a fast snowball success!
It was something that happened at the right moment and the right time. Luckily, I ran into the right channels.
How would you describe your jewelry?
My jewelry is more of an art. It’s definitely not something that’s teeny-tiny with a small little sheen. I definitely create a statement. I design with my heart and my soul. You can definitely see it in the pieces—they’re like an art piece. It is jewelry, but it also complements your bone structure and your appearance. I put a lot of emphasis on the bone structure.
What are the materials you use?
They are all semi-precious. Luckily, I have the benefit of my family diamond business to help with that. We have very rare stones to mix in our one-of-a-kind collection. The structure part is plated with either 14 carat white gold or 22 carat gold. This way the client won’t have to worry about the pieces getting tarnished or creating a rash. We think about every single detail and every aspect of the jewelry.
I have seen the jewelry. It is very beautiful. You said you want to complement the bone structure, but you have some very interesting, intricate designs. Can you give me an example of what inspires that?
The pieces are inspired by nature: flowers, trees, leaves and their textures and colors . . . or even textures of stone and wood in flooring . . . even fountains and the rain. When I’m referring to the bone structure and the appearance of the client, how could I bring up those ideas and concepts’ shape and form, based on my inspirations and be able to collaborate and combine and create something that actually flows with the bone structure of a human being, and make it look like something that really frames your face or neckline? It raises the look of eleganceand complements the charisma of its owner. The answer is every piece has to embody something that complements those particular elements. That’s why it’s called jewelry. You want to wear the necklaces. You don’t want the necklaces to wear you.
So your line is only three years old.
Yes, I feel really grateful for all the great response that I got, including all the press, clients, and fan base. I feel really fortunate for that.
You had a lot of success in a very short period of time. Where can we find your jewelry?
You can find it on our website. We do exhibitions with museums and high-end boutiques. Every 3-4 months we launch one-of-a-kind collections not announced on our website—only announce it to those on our email list. When I’m in Los Angeles, I schedule private appointments with my clients.
How do you go about actually designing these pieces?
I sketch, and every time I go back to Thailand, I get a chance to look at the stone market or the suppliers affiliated with my family diamond business. From there I can see if there are any stones that can fit what I’ve sketched. I will literally make at least one piece myself, and then I have a little team make a couple of the pieces. The maximum number of pieces per design is only five pieces. But every 3-4 months when we do our one-of-a-kind collections, that’s only one piece per one design.
Are they collectible or individually named?
Yes, we named them based on flowers in Thai or ladies’ names in Thai. It gives you a more meaningful association with the piece.
Is there anything challenging about creating your jewelry?
The challenging part for me is finding the right materials to match the design. Sometimes the structure’s not right or the number of the wiring was wrong, but once you complete it, it’s like a miracle. Because when it’s finished, you know it’s right. I get ecstatic every time I create and finish a new piece. I have to put each piece on a person, because I have to make sure it sits right on the neck. So when it’s completed, it’s a miracle to me. What can be challenging is making sure that the finished product actually looks like the picture I had in my head.
Could you list some of the semi-precious stones you use in your jewelry?
Yes. We use ruby, jade, quartz, emerald, rose quartz, yellow topaz, blue topaz, corals; and sometimes we even mix the stones, for example, ruby and emerald.
Everyone’s got inspirations, right? What jewelry designers inspire you?
Honestly, I don’t have any jewelry designers that inspire me. I see some of the pieces from other artists. I really admire them. But I am mostly inspired by different shapes and forms of art, like architecture or even a flower arrangement . . . even acolor scheme that moves me. I have been taking a lot of pictures lately of the floor with shadowing and different textures of concrete; the sand; the ways that nature grows; the odd shades of pink; etc. I prefer that to a real object or shape and form.
Highest High
When I put the right pieces on the right client and I know that is her piece, I get goose bumps because it will complement her face, neckline, complexion; it will frame her face and hair. When I put the right piece on, we both feel it and know it. It’s as if that piece was created just for her. That’s the highest point for me because I feel like I completed my job as a designer. It confirms for me that’s why I’m doing this!
Any lows?
Sometimes it can be challenging. I might have a design, but I can’t find the right stone for it. Or I found the stone, but the execution didn’t materialize the way I wanted. When those moments come, I just take a break, go for a walk or jog, and then return to it later. By the end, it always works out somehow.
My parents taught me that any job that you do, there will always be problems; but you’re lucky to get the chance to solve the problems in the business that you love and have a passion for. So for me, I have no complaints.
What advice would you give to another aspiring jewelry designer?
1. You really have to follow your passion. You really have to be honest with yourself. If you want to be a fashion designer, jewelry designer, or a singer, it’s what’s deeply inside screaming for you to do it. Follow that and never give up. There will always be obstacles where things aren’t as smooth, but just don’t give up. Be passionate about it; and in the end, it will pay you back. The difficulties are just a test to see if you really want to go through with it.
2. Be open-minded. When you become a designer, it’s like being an artist. You have an ego. But if you become an open-minded person, it will be much more fun while you are enjoying learning everyday from everything and everyone. There are a lot of things in this world that you don’t know and it benefits and can inspire you.
